KY Derby Mint Julep
Ingredients
4-5 sprigs fresh mint1-2 tsp coconut sugar
1-2 tbsp water
1 can of Ginger Ale, I prefer to use Olipop’s Ginger Ale or Lemon Ginger soda
2 cups crushed ice
Optional: 2oz of Kentucky Bourbon per glass, Old Forester or Woodford Reserve are my top suggestions but any will do!
Directions
- 1. Wash the mint, shake it dry, and separate most of the mint leaves from the stems, leaving mint stems as a garnish for each of your drink glasses (if you’re making two drinks, keep 2 sprigs) – ideally you want 8-10 mint leaves at least
- 2. Add the mint leaves to some type of muddler, and muddle the mint leaves until they’re very well-torn, adding in your desired amount of coconut sugar, and just enough water to dissolve the coconut sugar – usually about 1 tbsp of water and 1 tsp of coconut sugar – you want to extract as much of the mint flavor from the mint as possible.
- 3. Add your desired crushed ice to each glass
- 4. With a strainer, strain equal parts of the muddled mint and sugar mixture into the two glasses (if I get a little crushed mint in my glass, I like to leave it and think it can be pretty)
- 5. Crack open your preferred Ginger Ale or similar replacement, and top off each of the glasses ~ if you want a deliciously refreshing mint mocktail, you’re ready to garnish the glasses with your stemmed fresh mint previously set aside
- 6. If you want to add 2oz Kentucky Bourbon next to each glass, go for it! Just stir it in sightly with a spoon before drinking. I suggest using either Woodford Reserve as it is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, or Old Forester
If you prefer to drink your Kentucky Bourbon neat, my go-to brand to sip is Basil Hayden! Depending on your allergy needs, you can swap out any of the above ingredients with similar replacements. If you want a strong mint flavor, I’ve also used McCormick Pure Mint Extract before, but you need to tread extremely lightly and start with one drop added only to the muddled mint. Happy Derby Season!
